Thelonious Monkfish

I love hearing about new restaurants in my neighborhood, so I was thrilled to hear there was a new Japanese, Sushi and Thai place opening up on Mass. Ave. Thelonious Monkfish is new, clean and modern restaurant with huge front windows. The restaurant has tables as well as a 6-seat sushi bar. It has an extensive menu and a very cool name.

I haven't had sushi in ages (I actually think the last time may have been last year in Japan) so I was looking forward to this meal.

This was a workday lunch so we kept things simple. Seaweed salad and edamame to start. Two of my favorite things, with lightly salted edamame being one of my favorite vegetables. These two made a great starter, and gave us something to snack on while we looked over the menu.

Like I said, the menu is extensive. There is so much to chose from - sushi, sashimi, rolls, vegetarian options, soups, noodles - this menu has it all. We decided to keep things simple and order what we came here for - sushi. The main course was maguro sashimi, Alaskan roll (salmon, avocado, cucumber, scallions) and Crazy roll (shrimp tempura, avocado, cucumber, tobiko, spicy mayo). Everything was fresh and made to order. I love maguro, it's my favorite, and this was fantastic. The rolls, not something I usually order, were delicious as well. I liked how different they were from each other.

The best thing about a sushi lunch is that no matter how much you eat, you don't feel awful afterward. I'm not sure if this place has a liquor license, but I'm sure I'll find out on my next visit! While it wasn't a cheap lunch ($20 each), for a sushi restaurant Thelonious Monkfish is affordable and is a very welcome addition to the Central Square dining scene!
